Our Macadamia Orchard is located 50 minutes from Central Auckland on the very edge of the mighty Kaipara Harbour. It is an idyllic and peaceful spot with views out over mangroves and across the harbour. Most days we can hear the crashing of the Tasman Sea at Muriwai Beach.
Since May 2011, when we purchased this property we have not used chemical/synthetic/artificial herbicides, pesticides, fungicides or fertilizers. We also have not used genetically modified plants or seeds.
We use certified organic seaweed and rock salt to fertilize our trees and gardens. We chip all the Macadamia Nut tree prunings and use them to mulch the trees. We also compost the macadamia nut husks, shelter belt tree chippings and pasture grass to use under the trees and in our gardens. We have a horse to help keep the grass at bay. We have chickens to help with the pest control. We also use specific "catch crops" to attract pests such as shield bugs.
From the 1 November 2014 we were officially registered with Organic Farm NZ and were fully Certified with them until 1 November 2019. As of the 1 November 2019 we are no longer "Certified Organic". We lost faith in the certification processes with OFNZ. We were going to register with one of the bigger certifiers but the annual costs were going to be over $1,500 so we decided to withdraw our application. We adhere to the Technical Rules for Organic Production MAF Standard OP3, Appendix Two June 2011. We are absolutely committed to farming organically and as sustainably as possible and our practises remain exactly the same as when we were certified but without the endless paper work. We have been committed organic gardeners for 30 + years. We try to limit our use of fossil fuels and try to live as lightly as we can, solar and wet back hot water, wool insulation, double glazed windows, energy efficient light bulbs, composting toilet, rain water harvesting, grey water recycling, 100% electric car for deliveries. We plant and encourage native regrowth carbon sequestration.
